Are Zebras Black with White Stripes? Or White with Black Stripes?

Yesterday I mentioned that I had a necklace frame display in the making. Well after taking a trip to JoAnn's today for some rolled cork, my project is complete! I've been working on it since last Wednesday when I came up with the idea. I had pinned this picture and I just knew I had to have one. I LOVED the doorknob idea as well, but Home Depot and my local hardware store didn't have anything girly like that. I did check out an online site called Anthropologie that I have been newly introduced to. They have some super adorable doorknobs in their hardware department, but I wasn't willing to shell out $8 per doorknob. That's when I came up with the idea of using jumbo push pins, which conveniently come in a black and white combo pack for only $3 for 6 of them! Those numbers were much more appealing. After all, I was trying to keep this project budget-friendly.

Okay so after having a plan of action, I headed to Goodwill on Thursday in hunt of the perfect frame. It was there that I found this simple, yet elegant white mirror for only, wait for it...$5.99.

I easily removed the mirror and gave it quite a few coats of black spray paint. I then proceeded to sand down the frame a little so the white would show through in spots. This would match the fabric I would use as the backing a little better than a solid black frame.

I then used spray-adhesive to adhere a piece of thick cardboard (came with mirror) to the cork which I had sized to fit. I then covered my cork board with the fabric, added some large black & white push pins, and hung my necklaces.

Drum roll please...

How awesome is this?! Let me answer that for you...so awesome! The zebra print matches my dorm room bedding and the distressed frame fits the look perfectly! It didn't turn out exactly like the Pinterest picture, but I like mine much better. The wild zebra print is much more exciting than a piece of plywood. Plus, if I ever wanted to change the fabric down the road, it could easily be done.

So there's my big reveal! I hope you enjoyed reading about it. I also finished my turquoise earring frame today so look for that post later this week.

Psst:  If you haven't checked out Pinterest, you're missing out on a lot of web inspiration. DIY crafts, wedding ideas, recipes to try, fashion, etc. You can "pin" any online picture to their website and organize them into boards. They do take about two weeks to process your invite request, but it's SO worth it! Check it out at www.pinterest.com

Now There's Something You Don't See Every Day...

So I promised a little sneak peek of my in-progress project. I'm making another earring frame display, but this one is going to be for ME! I'm planning to hang it in my college dorm room so that I don't have to take my jewelry armoire with me. It's quite large so to save space, I thought it would be perfect to use the vertical space in my room by hanging it on the wall. (PS: I'm also working on a necklace frame display for the wall. Details to come soon!)

I started my buying an old wooden frame from Goodwill. The frame was black and pretty beat up. So for this project, it was perfect! I sanded it down quite a bit to smooth it out. I then proceeded to paint it a bright turquoise color. It was a little bright at first and too put together looking. Yes, that's possible. So I took some sandpaper and roughed up a few spots to give it an older, distressed look like this.

However, I didn't want it to look too distressed and out of place compared to my other dorm decor. So I only sanded a little in certain places so it would look similar to the frame in the top left corner of the picture above.

Well, wah-lah! Here's the frame in all of it's wonderful turquoise glory.

Now there's something you don't see every day (hence this blog title).

After drying for 24 hours, I chose to seal it with a finishing spray that I picked up at Michael's for only $3.59 thanks to a 40% off coupon! See that coupon HERE, but act quickly - it expires April 29th!!

Well that's how this frame is going to look FOR NOW. Keep your eyes peeled for a new post later this week to see what I turn this frame into!

Welcome to Framed Frosting!

This is my first blog so please bare with me as I'm still finding my around this site and working on designing the blog. Look for some more improvements coming soon.

So why start now you may ask? Well it was a few days ago when I came up with an idea to make my friend's birthday gift instead of buying her something. As seeing as we're going to college this fall, I thought it might be nice for her to have something she could remember be by. Enter, earring frame display.

I got my inspiration from the picture seen HERE

However I wanted to make some slight tweaks to it. Instead of the wiring hanging across the frame, I wanted something that would hold more than a couple pairs of earrings. This is where some imagination and creativity came into play. I went to Michael's yesterday with my 50% off coupon in hand and bought some supplies and got to work.

I was hoping that the color of my frame would turn out more of a plum color, but it's actually more like cherry wood which is also very pretty. I'm sure my friend will add a few personal touches to the frame, but that's what is so great about this. It can be personalized in so many ways!

Here's what her new earring display looks like!

And of course, a little close up is necessary...

So there's a look at how well my first earring display frame turned out. Not too shabby, eh? And now that I know these are super cool looking, I'm in progress with my frame.

Look for that post to follow tomorrow! :)
